stanthorpe

At the heart of “The Granite Belt” region extending for 50km north from the border of New South Wales, Stanthorpe is surrounded by large granite outcrops. These can be seen as you drive through the countryside on your visits to the many farms and vineyards.

The area is unusually cold for Queensland, with the average minimum temperature in July being 0.3 degrees Celsius.  The area is known for cold climate apples, grapes, and stone fruits, as well as warm wood fires, delicious wines, beers, ciders, and local produce

The town is set amongst heritage buildings, parks and green-lands, with walking tracks, and several cycling trails varying in length and difficulty.  The locals are warm and welcoming;  there are weekly markets where farmers sell their locally grown organic produce and meats.

Both Girraween, and Sundown National Park can be accessed from Stanthorpe during your stay, allow some time to explore and experience the awe inspiring granite outcrops, consisting of angular tors and precarious boulders. Sundown National Park has a spectacular landscape of gorges, sharp ridges, and peaks over 1000 metres.

Girraween is closer to Stanthorpe, and can be accessed with a two-wheel drive.  The name Girraween is an Aboriginal name meaning “place of flowers”.  The park is well known for its spectacular displays of wildflowers during the spring months, with some flowers continuing to grow throughout summer.  Girraween is also a great place to dip your toes or have a swim, provided there has been enough rain.
